United Way Summer Reading Party

READING PARTIES SCHEDULED TO BOOST SUMMER LEARNING

As a part of a community-wide We Read to Succeed initiative, United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County will be hosting Summer Reading Parties throughout June and July in an effort to prevent summer learning loss.

These fun-filled events will be intermingled with summer school and free lunch offerings at each participating school. Students will play games, participate in story time, enjoy literacy-themed activities, learn how to use the Massanutten Regional Library access card online, and select free books to read at home during their summer vacation. Each of these gatherings collectively function to influence the larger goal of meeting the third-grade reading benchmark through increased school attendance, readiness, and summer learning opportunities.

During the summer months, many students have reduced exposure to the learning environment and spend less time reading at home. According to the National Summer Learning Association, all youth experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer months, which ultimately contributes to lower standardized testing scores and loss of critical knowledge.   Summer reading parties will help keep young minds active in a casual, interactive environment.
